2023: From Covid to War

Below are the images from Clifford Peterson’s 2023 twelfth annual calendar, which grows from events of 2022 and those anticipated in 2023.

Mountain is a unifying theme, both as a metaphor of all things falling down onto people’s heads as well as a trope for the triangularity and stone that can create strength and shelter (May, July, August, September).

May, entitled Hometown, is a yet another collaboration of Clifford and Eunhyung Chung, in which Eunhyung has turned shapes from Clifford’s drawings into a sculpture evoking shelter and sanctuary.

June echoes the earlier BrainTree series, and November extends the 48 Contiguous States series with blue and red in response to the 2022 election and divisiveness within the country.

The year begins and ends with laser-cut or digitally created puzzle pieces seeking the whole picture (January, December).

Ground Hog Day (February) is one of many watercolors from 2022, this one becoming the source for thousands of digital distillations and multiplications.

March and April express the conflicts in Ukraine in epic and personal dimensions.

October depicts the mid-1850s barn that Clifford is single-handedly renovating into a studio, gallery, event, and visual laboratory space. The barn is not only for his personal use but also for artists staying at the Taleamor Park residency that Clifford and his wife, Lisa Lee Peterson, host.
